Viime syksynä huikeasti onnistunut Eagles Cup kasvaa tulevana syksynä kahden ikäluokan tapahtumaksi. Syyskuun ensimmäisenä viikonloppuna Vaasassa pelataan U11 ikäluokan turnaus ja viikkoa myöhemmin U12 ikäluokan turnaus. Meidän tarkoituksena on kasvattaa Eagles Cupia maltillisesti vuosi vuodelta. Toivottavasti meillä on jossain vaiheessa 4-5 Eagles Cupia eri ajankohtina, Jukka Leino JuniorSportista kertoo.
Eagles Cupissa pelataan pelejä neljässä eri tasossa. Tämä on ollut suurempien seurojen toive. Meillä on Suomessa paljon seuroja, joissa ikäluokat ovat isoja ja Eagles Cup tarjoaa mahdollisuuden osallistua koko ikäluokan voimin samaan turnaukseen niin, että jokainen saa juuri itselleen sopivia pelejä. Viime syksynä tämä toteutettiin ensimmäisen kerran tällaisena ja palaute oli pääosin hyvä. Viime kaudella kokeilimme seurojen toiveesta myös yhden päivän konseptia, jolloin kaksi sarjaa pelattiin lauantaina ja kaksi sunnuntaina. Jälkikäteen keskusteltuna selkeästi suurin osa osallistuneista joukkueista koki, että kahden päivän turnaus olisi voinut olla toimivampi ja sellainen tulevan syksyn turnauksesta nyt tehdäänkin. Välillä on hyvä kokeilla tehdä asioita eri tavalla ja kerätä sitä kautta kokemuksia. Nyt olemme kokeilleet yhden päivän konseptin, mutta palaamme takaisin yön yli kestävään turnaukseen.
Toimivasta konseptista kertoo sekin, että U12 turnausta kasvatettiin 40 joukkueen turnaukseksi ja se varattiin silti nopeasti täyteen. Ulkopuolelle jäi vielä huikeita seuroja, joille oli todella harmillista sanoa, ettei valitettavasti mahdu enää, mutta se kertoo myös siitä, että asiat tehtiin viimeksi hyvin. U11 turnauksessa on vielä tilaa ja se on ollut tavallaan aika mielenkiintoista kuinka erilaisia perättäiset ikäluokat voivat olla. 2015 syntyneiden osalta on tullut usealta seuralta vastaan asioita, jotka eivät vuosi sitten nousseet 2014 syntyneillä lainkaan esiin, mutta sehän vaan kertoo että jokainen ikäluokka on omanlaisensa, Leino jatkaa.

Last autumn, the hugely successful Eagles Cup will expand this coming fall into an event for two age groups. On the first weekend of September, a tournament for the U11 age group will take place in Vaasa, followed by the U12 tournament one week later. “Our aim is to grow the Eagles Cup gradually year by year. Hopefully, at some point, we’ll have 4–5 Eagles Cups at different times of the year,” says Jukka Leino from JuniorSport.
The Eagles Cup features games played across four different levels. This has been a request from larger clubs. In Finland, many clubs have large age groups, and the Eagles Cup offers the opportunity for an entire age group to participate in the same tournament, while still ensuring that every player gets games suited to their level. This format was implemented for the first time last fall, and the feedback was mostly positive. Last season, we also tested a one-day concept at the request of clubs, with two divisions played on Saturday and two on Sunday. In retrospect, it became clear that most teams felt a two-day tournament would have worked better—so that’s what we’re planning for the coming fall. Sometimes it’s good to try things a different way and gain experience. We’ve now tried the one-day format, but we’re returning to the overnight tournament model.
The strength of the concept is also evident in the fact that the U12 tournament was expanded to accommodate 40 teams—and still sold out quickly. Unfortunately, some excellent clubs had to be turned away due to limited space, which was disappointing, but it also shows that things were done well last time. There is still room in the U11 tournament, and it’s been quite interesting to see how different consecutive age groups can be. With players born in 2015, we’ve encountered several issues raised by clubs that didn’t come up at all with the 2014 group last year. “It just shows that each age group has its own characteristics,” Leino adds.
